Jeffrey L. Jones AKA Captain Suba

Jeffrey L. Jones — better known throughout the islands as Captain Suba — isn’t just an author. He’s a lifelong mariner, storyteller, and true island soul who has spent more than four decades following the call of wind, water, and wonder.
Licensed as a captain in 1980, he has navigated everything from the winding backwaters of Florida to the open seas of the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, and St. Maarten. Along the way, he didn’t just sail past the islands — he lived them. For 11 years, Captain Suba called his boat home in Marathon, waking each day to salt air, shifting tides, and the quiet rhythm of life at sea.
Those years shaped more than his seamanship — they shaped his spirit.
Between guiding boats, consulting businesses, raising a family, and running Captain Suba’s Nautical Gifts & Décor, he built a life rooted in adventure, faith, and deep respect for the natural world. He learned where the coral glows brightest, where the dolphins gather, which beaches stay quiet after sunset, and which small island churches welcome travelers like old friends.
And just as importantly, he learned what truly makes the Florida Keys special — not the resorts, not the crowds, but the people, stories, and simple joys that can only be found by slowing down and living like a local.

Why He Writes

Captain Suba’s mission is simple: To help you experience the Florida Keys the way they were meant to be experienced — honestly, respectfully, and with wonder. He writes to preserve what makes these islands special, encouraging travelers to support local businesses, protect fragile ecosystems, and embrace the relaxed, welcoming spirit that defines life in the Keys. This is not about rushing from place to place. It’s about dropping anchor, listening to the waves, and letting the islands change you.

His Mission

Today, Captain Suba continues to blend his tropical lifestyle with consulting work, writing, and time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. But no matter where he is, the Keys are always close to his heart — carried in every story he tells and every chart he draws for fellow wanderers. Because once the sea gets in your blood… it never truly lets you go.
